Reflection: Professional Reference

Description:
Kings Park High School was my first position as a music educator. It was situated on the suburban fringe of Melbourne where the population growth had boomed in recent years. It was a difficult school with problems such as over crowding and a multicultural clientele. We had many challenging students with emotional, behavioral and academic problems. I spent three years at this school and throughout this time Mr. Giacometti was the Deputy Principal. You will note that the reference is in my maiden name, Hunter.

My reflection:
At the time when I received this reference I did not appreciate its sincerity and did not put a lot of value on it. Yes, it stated my job description and basically said that I was competent but I knew that and thought, with the wisdom and confidence that youth bestows us, that it was obvious. As the years have progressed I look back on this reference now and appreciate more fully what Mr. Giacometti was trying to communicate. These days in education, particularly in international education where I have been told a reference is not worth the piece of paper it is written on and therefore, in my experience, is not readily forthcoming as such, a value statement as to a persons worth can be rare.
I particularly like the part, "I believe Julie Hunter made a quietly outstanding contribution to this school......." as it now makes me realize that my superiors were keeping an eye on me, as a fledgling, and that perhaps, despite the constant struggle in this school, I had made some inroads with the students.
